Lenovo has made business-class laptops for years. Recently, the company has made a name for itself by making reliable laptops at affordable prices for users on a budget. And, in most ways, the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 keeps up with the trend and should be a useful laptop for everyday users.
What you get here is a 15-inch laptop with enough power to throw you into everyday life, with a very comfortable keyboard to boot. If you’re working from home, or just want to do some light office or school work, the IdeaPad S145 will be more than enough.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 looks like a more expensive ThinkPad laptop. Its design isn’t something you’d call an attractive, all-plastic build that feels sturdy and should be more than durable enough for the average user. The display shows no sign of flexing even under stress, which is to be expected from Lenovo laptops.
A granite black finish, while minimal enough, comes standard with the Lenovo IdeaPad S145, and you can’t change that. That’s not surprising, though, especially given this laptop’s target audience: people looking for a durable, everyday-use laptop that can be carried around on the daily commute.
Another thing that you will love about this laptop is it’s thin and light. Measuring just 14.3 x 9.9 by 0.8 inches and weighing just 4 pounds, you’ll be able to take the IdeaPad S145 with you wherever you go without straining your back. By comparison, the Lenovo Flex 14 is even thinner and lighter, measuring 0.7 inches thick and weighing 3.5 pounds, and the Asus ZenBook 13 (UX331FA-AS51) is the best in class, only 0.5 inches thin. and 2.5 lbs. Still, the S145 will impress with how easy it is to carry.
As for port selection, the IdeaPad offering is pretty basic. You’re getting a pair of USB 3.1 ports, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port, and a headphone/microphone combo jack. That’s all. The wireless property comes via Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0. The speakers are quite quiet, and you really need to wear headphones.
The Lenovo IdeaPad S14 display is in line with the rest of the notebook: it’s likable, but nothing spectacular. It’s a 15.6-inch, 1366 x 768 IPS matte finish display that ought to work well in most environments. However, it’s not very bright if that’s what you want to do. For day-to-day use, it’s a very practical display but we expect at least a 1080p resolution like the one Lenovo offers in its range of business laptops.
Keyboard & Touchpad
It should come as no surprise that the keyboard here is stellar, though. After all, Lenovo has always provided the perfect laptop keyboard, and the keyboard on the IdeaPad S145 is a dream. We do a lot of typing here at TecnoMarts, so we really appreciate a keyboard that’s as tactile and downright comfortable as this keyboard. In fact, it may be one of the best budget laptops for writers – as long as you can see a few flaws.
We only wish we could say the same thing with the touchpad. It’s practical and functional, but there’s nothing more to it. It also doesn’t include a fingerprint reader like its ThinkPad siblings. However, we fully understand why it should have such a size. It’s a budget machine and Lenovo had to cut some corners to balance design and performance. The touchpad isn’t a pleasant experience, but it’s not the worst either.
Despite the Lenovo IdeaPad S145’s flaws, performance isn’t one of them. It’s powered by an AMD R4 graphics card with a 2.6GHz dual-core AMD A6-9225 (up to 3.0 GHz), 8GB of RAM, and 1TB of hard drive storage. That’s enough to get you through an entire workday with open tabs in Chrome, Slack, and iTunes without lagging. We find the S145 to be a crap home-office machine, and it at least stuns off bullets.
Don’t be fooled by this laptop’s budget price tag, this notebook can do some work, and it can multitask like an expensive machine. Granted you do not expect too much within the manner of gaming on this factor. The integrated AMD R4 graphics card will get you through basic gaming, plus, just don’t even try it. If you need to play modern games but are on a tight budget, Lenovo offers the IdeaPad L340 with an Intel Core i5 processor and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card.
Lenovo laptops are typically the most effective with battery life, and therefore the IdeaPad S145’s 6 hours 13 minutes is okay, though not the most effective. Don’t get us wrong, the six-hour battery life is nothing to write home about, but you should be able to complete most projects without reaching for a charger. The Lenovo Flex 14 offers simply over 8 hours on one charge, whereas the genus Acer Spin 3 (SP314-53N-77AJ) offers simply over 11 hours on one charge.
Our Rating | Good
The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 is an affordable laptop that you can take to college or work without a burden, and it adds excellent battery life and a nice design compared to most of its cheaper competitors.
- Exceptional value for money
- Excellent battery life
- Eye-catching design
- Middling keyboard
In this Lenovo IdeaPad S145 HD Business Laptop Review We found that The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 is a good laptop – it’s not particularly great either. If your budget is low and you are looking for a laptop to do some work and you don’t really care about anything else, this one will definitely get the job done.
Performance isn’t the best, especially the 1366 x 768 resolution, but there have to be compromises somewhere when creating a truly budget-friendly notebook. The higher-end options currently offered by Lenovo with better specs make a lot more sense, but it’s certainly still useful to have a budget-friendly option.
That said, the Lenovo IdeaPad S145 is a good option at the budget end of the market, and for the most part, it cuts the right corners, maintaining adequate build quality at a decent price. However, if you need a better screen and great performance overall, our Editors’ Choice for budget laptops, the Asus VivoBook 15 (F512FA-AB34) laptop, is at the top of your shortlist.
