HP Stream 11.6-inch HD Laptop, Intel Celeron N4000, 4 GB RAM, 32 GB eMMC, Windows 10 Home in S Mode with Office 365 Personal for 1 Year (11-ak0020nr, Diamond White)

The HP Stream 11-ak0020nr is a laptop made for students, and it’s available at an exceptionally low price. For that little money, you get a portable 11-inch laptop that includes an Office 365 subscription—one of the key things that makes this laptop a perfect fit for students.

Well, the display isn’t great and you have to deal with mediocre webcams. But if all you need is a cheap laptop that can get you through a day at school, Stream 11 does the job. This is easily one of the best laptops under $300 you can buy.

Summary

Technical Details

Design

While our review model sports a shiny, diamond-white color, the HP Stream 11 is still adorable considering its small size. The lid features a half-glossy, half-matte HP logo inscribed in the center, flanked by horizontally flowing ridges under the hinge, and transitioning to a soft glossy texture.

The interior features a compact keyboard, and while most of the deck has a brushed silver design, there are horizontal glossy lines that ‘stream’ through the touchpad into the deck below, making for a clean look. Unfortunately, the screen bezels are quite large.

HP Stream 11-ak0020nr shares a similar style because the 2019 Stream 11, weighs 2.3 pounds and measures 11.08 x 7.59 x 0.66 inches. The ASUS L203MA-DS04 weighs 2.2 pounds and measures 11.30 x 7.60 x 0.67 inches, and gets a better Full HD (1920 x 1080) screen than the 1366 x 768 you get on the Stream 11.

Ports

The port options on the Stream 11 haven’t changed much, which is great, and it bodes well for a USB Type-C port. The left side houses a security lock slot, a USB 3.1, and a headphone jack, while the right side houses a microSD card slot, a USB 3.1 port, a USB Type C port, and an HDMI port.

Display

The HP Stream 11’s 11.6-inch display could be a bit washed out and includes a resolution of 1366 x 768, however, it will a good job for its low worth. At 198 nits brightness, this display is sort of dim, however, it’s not too far away from the category average (206 nits) or the VivoBook (203 nits), however, it still lags behind most Chromebooks within the same price range.

When watching Men in Black: International, the streets of London look washed out on the HP 11-ak0020nr’s panel because of the high contrast, however, it’s possible to see a lot of the surroundings as a result. While this resolution is acceptable, for a budget college laptop, it’s the best you’ll find on even most budget Chromebooks.

Keyboard & Touchpad

Typing on the Stream 11’s keyboard isn’t great, but it’s not uncomfortable either. The problem with 11-inch laptops is that the keys are a bit tight, but the Stream 11 does get decent key travel compared to the kind of deck you’d find on an 11-inch laptop.

The 3.7 x 2.1-inch touchpad is on the small side, but it’s soft and provides a decent click. It doesn’t use Windows Precision drivers, so you can’t easily customize your gestures. Despite this, Windows 10 gestures like two-finger scrolling and three-finger tabbing work well.

Performance

For the price, you shouldn’t expect out of the Stream 11, the Intel Celeron N4000 processor with 4GB of RAM easily handles up to 10 Microsoft Edge tabs as well as 1080p YouTube videos. The included Office 365 lets you easily run Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other productivity suites, and 1TB of OneDrive storage is more than enough for accessing your files on the go. You also get 32GB of eMMC local storage for your small documents.

Of course, if you try something more intensive you should expect some serious slowdown. The Stream’s Intel UHD graphics card is only good for basic games like Minecraft, however, if you are looking for one thing for gaming on a budget, our Editors’ selection for budget gaming laptops—the Asus TUF FA506IH-AS53—is an excellent choice.

Battery Life

When it comes to battery life, the HP Stream is a lot of reliable than some laptops that price somewhere within the quadruple digits. you’ll surf online endlessly over Wi-Fi at 150 nits brightness, and also the battery can last 10 hours 26 minutes, which beats its predecessor’s 8:24 also because of the budget average (7:41).

Our Rating | Good

The HP Stream 11-ak0020nr is an affordable laptop you’ll desire for college or work while not a burden, and it adds wonderful battery life and a pleasant style compared to most of its cheaper competitors.

Pros
  • Exceptional value for money
  • Excellent battery life
  • Eye-catching design
  • Bundled with Office 365 Person
Cons
  • Unspectacular HD display
  • Slightly iffy touchpad

Conclusion

The 2020 HP Stream 11 could be a lovely, transportable laptop that is sturdier than some laptops within the $300-plus range and offers an extremely sensible battery life. However, it has a pretty washed-out display and its webcam isn’t great either. But those are all the aspects one should consider before buying, not the reason for not buying Stream 11.

Compared to its sub-$300 competitors, Stream 11 is a great buy. But if you can stretch your budget a bit, you can get the ASUS F512JA-AS34. It’s bulky in comparison and has a bigger screen, but it also offers much better performance, a ton of ports, and good battery life.

But overall, the 2020 HP Stream 11-ak0020nr may be a marvelous acquisition if you’re looking out on an extra-tight budget or would love a reliable secondary laptop pc for travel or college.
