HP Chromebook 14-Inch Laptop with 180-Degree Hinge, Full HD Screen, AMD Dual-Core A4-9120 Processor, 4 GB SDRAM, 32 GB eMMC Storage, Chrome OS (14-db0050nr, Snow White)

We used to be suspicious of Chromebooks. Yes, Chrome OS is pretty lightweight and clean, we thought—a delicious operating system that’ll get you online as quickly and seamlessly as possible, but that wasn’t our cup of tea. But, systems like our review unit, the HP Chromebook 14 (14-db0050nr), are proof enough that why you’ll live your digital life entirely in a browser, relying entirely on web apps to get stuff done and Your personal information should be kept safe.

Now, Chromebooks have become a favorite among users looking for a device to check email and surf the web, and most of them are fast enough with seamless integration with the Google Play Store. The Chromebook 14’s 14-inch is bright and crisp, and it offers plenty of performance for multitasking, but competing Chromebooks tend to have better battery life and more colorful screens.

Summary

Technical Details

Design

HP’s Chromebook isn’t a premium PC, but it’s a sleek, good-looking piece of kit nonetheless. The tapered circle is 0.72 inches thick at its thickest point. At 3.0 pounds, it’s fairly light, though not quite as much as the 11.6-inch, 2.76-pound Acer Chromebook R11 (C738T-C7KD). However, this extra weight gives you a slightly larger screen, and the 14-db0050nr doesn’t feel heavy in the hand at all.

The white case itself is entirely plastic, and it flexes and creaks a bit when you adjust the screen or lift it with one hand. On the bright side, there’s no protruding screw on the case, so you don’t have to worry about a loose screen randomly falling off.

Connectivity

Connectivity options on the Chromebook 14 are excellent. The left edge houses a USB 2.0 port and a USB Type-C port and a security lock slot. On the right, you’ll find a Type-C port, a USB 2.0 port, an SD card reader, and a headphone/mic combo jack.

Two USB 3.1 information 1 Type-C ports support charging, and you’ll use them for upstream video signals rather than proprietary HDMI. Personally, I’d love it if all two USB 2.0 ports support USB 3.0, but that’s a lot more connectivity than you’ll find in most Chromebooks. You also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections so you don’t miss anything available online.

Keyboard & Trackpad

If you’re coming from a cheap Windows notebook, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the typing experience on the HP Chromebook 14-db0050nr. The keyboard feels responsive with clicky keys and lots of key travel.

The keyboard flexes a bit when you press it hard, but under normal use, it doesn’t get flimsy at all. My only concern here is the lack of a dedicated Caps Lock key; A search key takes its place and it is triggered only while holding the Alt key. It’s not a big deal, but it makes it more difficult to tweet all the capital letters over and over again.

The trackpad is equally great. It’s big and spacious, with plenty of room to move your fingers. The entire trackpad is one button, which means you won’t have to fiddle around to find left- and right-click buttons.

Performance

With a 1080p (1920-by-1080) display, a 2.2GHz AMD dual-core A4-9120 processor, 4GB of SDRAM, and 32GB of eMMC storage, the HP Chromebook 14 is as fast as they come for basic work and play. While not the best for multitasking, it’s fast enough for day-to-day tasks, but you’ll notice that it sometimes stalls under heavy usage. Under more casual web browsing, this type of stutter is rare, so you won’t encounter problems as often, just like in a Chromebook equipped with an AMD A4-9120c processor.

You won’t have trouble playing casual games like Cut the Rope and streaming 1080p video from Netflix on the HP 14-DB0050NR, but again the synthetic test scores favor its Intel competitors. If you need something affordable for gaming, the Asus TUF FX505DT-AH51 has AMD’s Ryzen 5 processor and a dedicated Nvidia GTX 1650 graphics card but costs much less than competing gaming laptops.

Battery Life

HP claims that the Chromebook 14’s 2-cell, 47-watt-hour battery can last more than 8 hours and 30 minutes on a single charge. However, you may not get such a long run time. The Chromebook 14 managed just over 5 hours 41 minutes on a single charge when playing an HD video file in VLC On Loop (50% screen brightness, 50% volume with headphones plugged in).

Our Rating | Good

The HP Chromebook 14-db0050nr guarantees smart multitasking performance, offers smart audio quality, however competitors supply brighter performance and higher battery life.

Pros
  • Good multitasking performance
  • Decent audio
  • Large 1080p screen
Cons
  • Dim display
  • Relatively short battery life

Conclusion

The Chromebook 14 (like all other Chromebooks) isn’t going to be as flexible as a full Windows PC or Mac. No matter how Google turns things around, you’re still heavily dependent on web-based apps to work, and basically, such restrictions aren’t for everyone.

Still, at its value, our review unit, the HP 14-db0050nr might be a pleasant value for those looking for a basic web browsing machine. It’s cheaper than the Lenovo Chromebook C330 whereas provides a much bigger screen. The Acer Chromebook 15 offers some better features with new components, more memory, and a better-looking boot if aesthetics is important.

As the way, because the HP Chromebook 14 (14-db0050nr) laptop is bothered, you are obtaining a compact, responsive and friendly notebook that is extremely fun to use despite its shortcomings.
